Heatherwick Studio Unveils' America's New Community Library '

Apr 12, 2023

Heatherwick Studio has unveiled their first public library design for the Howard County Library in Maryland, USA. The building will serve as a community hub, designed to reflect the library's evolving and complex role in the city. The project provides not only facilities for borrowing books, but also space for cultural events, group learning, workshops and facility rental. Construction is expected to begin in 2024 and open in 2027.

The design was inspired by the idea of James Rouse, the planner of the community where the new library is located, that the city is a garden that nourishes people. In keeping with this philosophy, Heatherwick has proposed a structure that is intended to be a community centre that enables residents to grow and learn through its facilities and location. Located on the city's waterfront main road, the building has panoramic views of Lake Kittamaqundi. The building's form gently rises from the lakeside horizon, giving visitors an opportunity to explore the building from its lush green sloped roof.

The library is intended to accommodate a rich diversity of educational and cultural programs that meet the diverse needs of the community. Its five floors offer Spaces for work, play and study. Additional facilities such as an educational kitchen, cafe and manufacturing lab are valuable additions to the library, further providing for meetings and community gatherings. In addition, a large open-air theatre will allow the local community to organize activities and initiate events such as conferences, workshops and cultural and artistic performances.

The external space of the library also provides ample space for learning and exploration. The exterior facade is interlaced with plant-mounted steps that allow visitors to climb onto a well-arranged terrace that is close to its native plants. The design focuses on creating a direct connection between the building and the surrounding public park and lake, thereby reinforcing the library's role as an integral part of community life.

Heatherwick Studio has unveiled plans to transform an old desalination plant into the central axis of a new cultural waterfront zone in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The world-renowned architecture firm is also responsible for the redesign of the Harley-Davidson campus and community park in Milwaukee. The firm also designed Toranomon-Azabudai in Tokyo, Japan, which was selected for ArchDaily's 2023 list of most anticipated public buildings.
